The EV9 is available in two options for passenger seating: a six-passenger version with captain’s chairs in the second row, or a seven-passenger version with a bench in the second row. During our test drive of the prototype, we found that the front seats were firm and the synthetic upholstery felt somewhat inexpensive. However, we hope that this will not be the case for U.S.-spec models.

The second-row captain’s chairs in the EV9 are similar to the front seats and come with features such as heating, ventilation, and massaging. The third row in the back comfortably accommodates adults, although there may be some compromises on legroom depending on the concessions made by those in the second row. The EV9 offers 20 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear, which is almost as much as the Telluride. With both the second- and third-row seats folded flat, it provides up to 82 cubic feet of cargo space.

Performance

The EV9 range starts with the Standard model, which is rear-wheel-drive and equipped with a single electric motor at the back, producing 215 horsepower. The Long Range variant also has rear-wheel-drive but has a larger battery, resulting in a slightly lower peak power of 201 horsepower. According to Kia’s claims, the former can reach 62 mph in 8.2 seconds while the latter takes a slower 9.4 seconds. For all-wheel-drive models, there is a dual-motor setup that generates a combined power of 379 horses. Additionally, there is an available Boost mode that increases peak torque output and provides quicker acceleration. Kia states that the AWD EV9 can hit 62 mph in just 5.3 seconds, making it the preferred choice for those seeking quick take-offs typical of EVs.

Fuel Economy & Real-World MPGe

The fuel-economy estimates for the EV9 have not been released by the EPA at this time. However, considering its boxy design and larger dimensions, it is anticipated that the EV9 will have a lower MPGe combined rating compared to the Kia EV6’s 117. Based on our estimation, depending on the type of drivetrain, the EV9 could achieve a range of 79 to 83 MPGe.

Internationally, the EV9 offers three powertrain options. The EV9 RWD is the starting point and comes equipped with a 76.1kWh battery.
