Riding an Aerox 155 scooter:- It’s been half a year since the Aerox 155 started its journey with us. In that time, it has done a few Mumbai-Pune roadway runs, a few Kandivali-Vashi drive runs and endless school drop-pickup and staple runs. Plus, despite the fact that it looks unexpected and runs on a novelty that ordinary bikers haven’t even thought about, let alone handle, it’s still an exceptionally useful tool. Obviously it has some disadvantages too. Then, to that point, here is a list of things that are great and not so great about having an Erox.

The Yamaha Aerox 155 is powered by a single chamber, liquid cooled, 155 cc motor derived from the famous R15 and MT-15 along with a programmed transmission. It produces 15PS and 13.9Nm. The motor is currently OBD-2 compliant and is also compatible with E20 fuel (a blend of 80% petroleum and 20% ethanol). The bike rests on an underbone chassis which is suspended on an adaptive front fork and double shocks at the rear. The bike rides on 14-inch wheels shod in 110-segment (front) and 140-sector (rear) tyres. The braking duties are handled by a 230mm front disc with single-channel ABS and a 130mm drum brake at the rear.

Fuel efficiency

An eco-friendliness figure of around 40 km/l is not extraordinary when one thinks of a conventional bike. In any case, 40 is still a decent number when you take the Erox’s presentation along with the usual mish-mash. For our purposes, it is a fair exchange to sacrifice 10 kmpl to increase the enjoyment of the ride by a few folds. Happy to report that the Aerox has surpassed my assumptions about long stretches in the city as well as long stretches on the expressway. This is subject to a few variables – eg seat. It’s long, padded all around and not overly firm. Second, the suspension is settled and although a bit firm, handles rough roads and knocks well overall. Third – ergonomics. There is ample space for someone like me in any event and the seating position is also very comfortable. It took 9 hours to drive from Delhi to Kufri and then I also went back to Shimla to spend the night. All this in one day.

Does Erox really have that advantage? All things considered, if you are looking for the best parkway bike in India, there are some disadvantages as well. Assuming you’re in Rapid mode, the mileage drops to under 30, and that means the 5.5-litre tank gives you a safe riding range of around 140-150km in the real world. Then, the ‘cruiser’ type plank of the floor swallows up much of your useful or spare room and this is one area where every other bike beats out. Also, if I may add, the Erox 155 gives you a few minutes to smile, though in an extremely brief and subdued way. In fact, the motor and exhaust notes are very controlled on the whole and not at all fiery or uncontrolled as might have been expected.
